5.14 Spying through the wall: Mary Babb, 1666

Mary Babb and her brother-in-law were prosecuted for adultery and incest (their relationship being within the forbidden degrees) at the consistory court of York in 1666. Like many other such cases in the late seventeenth century, the testimony of her neighbours follows a familiar narrative model with its own conventions, though there are some personalised touches like the words of love. Certainly, early modern buildings made it relatively easy to spy on illicit sex; but stories like these, whilst heavily based on established convention, also allow room for creative flourishes.
